Support for Dedicated Funding for the Pike Library System

Pike County Public Library advocates and patrons face a challenge to preserve a valuable service to residents in northeastern Pennsylvania. With the economy in shambles, they are championing a new, dedicated library tax.

Monroe County's public libraries have depended on a library tax for years. The small tax - ranging from 0.75 of a mill to 1.5 mills, depending on the library - generates sufficient operating funds for these libraries to provide good materials, services and programs.

Not so in Pike, which depends on the political and economic winds in Harrisburg and Pike County. A bill in the Pennsylvania state Senate proposes to slash funding for public libraries, including the Pike library, by up to 50 percent, a partial response to a budget crisis that projects a $3 billion state deficit. That could cost Pike as much as $120,000 in state funds.
